Shotgun made from iron bedposts; charge made of pieces of lead from curtain tape and match-heads, to be ignited by AA batteries and a broken light bulb.

On May 21, 1984 two inmates of a prison in Celle, Germany, took a jailer as a hostage, showed off their fire power by letting go at a pane of bullet-proof glass, and escaped by car.

Get the old Jimmy Steward movie "Carbine Williams" to see what can be done behind bars. Williams invented and built covertly the first M1 Carbine while in a federal pen for killing a federal agent.

Match stick heads. The cut the heads of the matches and packed em into the barrel; IIRC.

I guess it will always happen to some degree but its a shame that someone with the drive, ability and intelligence to make that from scratch was in jail in the first place. What a waste.

But yes, you do have a point. Then again, with the modern legal system there are a million and one ways to get your butt landed in jail. I dont know what landed this guy in jail though.

Thats a cool article. I'm curious though, it says owning the item is illegal. I read on here once that building a from scratch fire-arm for your own use was legal as long as it wasnt made to sell or ship across state-lines.

Anyone confirm or reference?

The 4 winds would be covered by NFA, not sure if destructive device or AOW, but definitely illegal to make without the tax stamp.
You can make yourself a scratch built not covered by NFA no problem, or pay the tax and build a 4 winds, but why would any sane person spend $200 and register it just to build it?
